The Problem
The small coffee industry faces a critical challenge: connecting farmers with laborers amidst increasingly unpredictable harvests. Without reliable access to timely labor, farms are unable to harvest their crops efficiently, leading to wasted produce, lost revenue and unsustainable business practices.
Global shifts in rainfall patterns have thrown coffee harvests into disarray. Historical seasons of 4–5 predictable, high-yield harvests have been replaced by seasons of 10–12 scattered, lower-yield ones – stretching the harvest season without increasing the amount of coffee picked – making it unrealistic for laborers, who are paid by volume, to commit to months of work for what may amount to a week's pay. As a result, fewer seasonal workers return each year, forcing farms to scramble for help, often paying inflated wages for less experienced labor. Many are now operating on the edge of viability.
How it Works
Harvest is a simple, community-driven app designed to meet this new reality. Instead of relying on word-of-mouth, farms can post real-time job listings—how many pickers they need, where, when, and for how much. Local laborers see the feed and can apply instantly with a tap.
By making it easy to hire short-term help on demand, we're shifting small coffee away from rigid, outdated staffing models and toward a flexible, gig-based system. Pickers can take jobs that match their availability. Farmers can find workers when they actually need them. And small coffee communities gain a practical tool to stay resilient in the face of climate disruption.
